Companies are being more flexible about allowing employees to use their own technology at work and are using social media more for communication, according to a report.

More than a third of organisations have introduced a flexible device usage policy, according to the Hudson ICT Leaders Series report.

More than one in two chief information officers bring their own smart phones to work and 24 percent bring their own tablets.

This has implications for asset management and security, the report said.

Fifty four percent of respondents said productivity was enhanced by the use of social media, while 57 percent thought innovation was improving.

Almost two thirds of organisations use social media as a promotional tool and it is increasingly being used as an internal communications device.

Information technology divisions of companies were increasingly taking on the role of integrators of technology, Gavin Till of Christchurch City Council said.

"There might be multiple cloud solutions and part of our job will be to ensure all solutions integrate together without impacting the business," Till said.
