Contact Energy has looked to its major shareholder for someone to steer the ship while the company searches for a new boss.

Contact has seconded Edison executive Stephen Barrett to be Contact's acting CEO, replacing Paul Anthony who is heading to the UK.

Contact chairman, Phil Pryke, says Mr Barrett is a world-class executive who has worked in the energy industry for 28 years and has been a leader in understanding changing competitive electricity markets.

Contact appears to be keen to calm its investors following Mr Anthony's surprise departure saying "the prompt appointment of Mr Barrett will provide continued strong leadership, focus and direction for Contact Energy".

The company also says the quick transition will help Contact maintain its commercial impetus.

Mr Barrett most recently worked as Edison's regional vice president, business development, for Australia and the Asia Pacific regions.
