Manufacturing rises s/a 2.9 percent in Q2

Seasonally adjusted manufacturing sales grew 2.9 percent in the June quarter compared with March, Statistics New Zealand said today.

The increase was much stronger than previous rises of 0.5 percent in the March quarter and 0.1 percent in the December 2001 quarter.

Thirteen out of 15 industries recorded sales increases in the June quarter, with the largest lift in machinery and equipment (up $227 million).

Wood product manufacturing came a distant second, with an increase of $127 million.

Two industries lost sales on the previous quarter, the largest being basic metal manufacturing (down $12 million).

Value-wise, finished goods increased by 2.8 percent year on year, while the value of raw materials increased 4.3 percent.
