Murray Horn has resigned from the board of New Zealand's biggest telecommunications company, Spark New Zealand, due to illness.

In a statement published to the NZX, Spark said Horn's planned retirement was being "brought forward by several months following recent ill-health, with today's board meeting his last".

Horn, a former Secretary to the New Zealand Treasury, announced his resignation as chair of intelligence software company Wynyard Group yesterday.

Spark chairman Mark Verbiest paid tribute to his work, saying "Murray has served the Spark New Zealand board of directors with distinction for nine years now, including playing key roles in the demerger from Chorus and the significant digital repositioning of Spark in recent years, as well as chairing the audit & risk committee for several years. Murray departs Spark New Zealand with the best wishes of his fellow directors, and we wish him a speedy recovery.”

In a second change to the board of Spark, Alison Gerry has been appointed as an independent non-executive director from July 1. She will formally seek election at the next Spark annual meeting, in November. She is a professional director who has previously sat on the boards of Infratil, TVNZ, Kiwibank and NZX. Spark says she has indicated she will step down from the boards of TVNZ and Kiwibank later this year.
