At least four buyers are negotiating to buy adventure tourism wholesaler Suntravel, following the company's liquidation this week after almost 25 years in business.
Liquidator Graeme McDonald, of McDonald Vague and Associates, said he was hopeful a sale could be finalised quickly to save the jobs of some of the agency's 22 staff.
Mr McDonald said 400-500 travellers could be affected by the liquidation, many of them already overseas or booked on tours, mainly to Africa, South America, China and the Middle East.
But most would be protected by travel insurance which normally covered third-party insolvency or by bond schemes similar to that operated by the Travel Agents Association of New Zealand.
