Christchurch Airport has formally opened the first stage of its new terminal building and started work on the second stage - including demolition of the former domestic terminal - to be completed in September 2012.

A major feature of the new terminal is a new $15 million baggage handling system, which is 750m long, Christchurch International Airport chief executive Jim Boult said.

The opening had gone without hitches, he said.

"Last week the integrated check-in hall opened, where all passengers, both international and domestic, check in," he said. This morning the first floor opened with a food court and shops.

The terminal was expected to handle six million travellers a year and to cost $237 million. So far $161.4 million has been spent on the project.
