More than 2,000 housing consents were issued last month, the first time they have exceeded that number since May last year.

Statistics New Zealand says 2,020 consents for new dwellings were issued in August, worth some $301.4 million.

The number of consents grew 14.2% compared with the July figure, which in turn had fallen 10.4% compared with June. 13 of the 16 regions recorded increases in new dwelling consents in August compared with the same month last year.

Statistics New Zealand says care should be taken when using the figures to interpret the short-term change in the number of new dwelling units because the series often records large fluctuations from month to month.

Non-residential building consents for August were valued at $209.5 million. Factories and industrial buildings comprised $36.1 million of the total, followed by offices and administration buildings worth $32.7 million and shops, restaurants and taverns with $28.4 million.

The total value of all building consents issued in August 2001 was $583.3 million.
