Housing consents remain high

Latest figures show that 2,148 building consents for new dwelling units were issued in November 2001 worth $298.4 million compared to 1,931 consents in October worth $299.8 million.

However the November figures were considerably higher than the same month last year, which recorded 1,700 consents worth $248.8 million.

The total number of new dwelling unit consents for the year ended November stood at 20,327, down slightly on 20,779 previously.

Statistics New Zealand says the trend in the number of new dwellings has been increasing since January 2001 and the number of new dwelling units was higher in 9 of the 16 regions when compared with November 2000.

Auckland stood out with 1,038 new dwelling units authorised in the region in November - the highest number since May 1999.
