Grocery co-operative Foodstuffs South Island is planning to build a $45 million distribution centre in the Christchurch suburb of Hornby.

Foodstuffs, whose members include Pak'nSave, New World, and Four Square supermarkets, said work was expected to start late in 2011, as it worked through planning and consent stages, with completion a year later.

The co-operative had bought 13ha of land to accommodate the new 25,000sq m development, which would be next to an existing 13,000sq m facility.

Foodstuffs South Island chief executive Steve Anderson said the company's present site in Papanui was too small for future growth, and had access difficulties for heavy vehicles.

"Hornby is now the distribution hub of the South Island due to its proximity to state highways north and south, the new southern motorway project, plus the Port of Lyttelton," he said.

Foodstuffs said it remained committed to its regional distribution centre in Dunedin.
