Morningstar has announced the finalists in its annual Fund Manager of the Year Awards and added two new categories: for KiwiSaver managers and Emerging Fund manager.

"The past year once again illustrated vividly the risks in investment markets," Morningstar Head of Adviser and Research Anthony Serhan says. "While few fund managers were able to stem the tide of red ink, some were able to limit their losses, and thereby lay better foundations to help their investors get back into the black."

The KiwiSaver Fund Manager of the Year Award recognises the provider which offers the best solution for New Zealanders' retirement savings needs. The criteria for assessment include nature of offerings, fee levels, quality of regular updates, educational materials, website tools and content, transparency of disclosure, and performance.

The other new award, Emerging Fund Manager of the Year, recognises the emerging fund manager which has the opportunity and ability to build a successful long-term track record through its performance and investment management capabilities. This award will not necessarily be made every year, but recognises quality new funds management businesses which do not meet the criteria for the other awards.

Winners are determined by a combination of performance over calendar 2008; risk-adjusted medium- to long-term track record; and qualitative analyst conviction. The overall winner will be the New Zealand fund manager which maintained the highest level of overall funds management excellence during calendar 2008.

The nominess this year are:

  • Fund Manager of the Year 2008; AMP Capital, Tower and Tyndall Investment Management
  • Multi-Sector: AMP Capital, ING and Tower
  • Fixed Interest: AMP Capital, ASB Group Investments and Tyndall
  • New Zealand Equities: AllianceBernstein, AMP Capital and Brook Asset Management
  • International Equities: ING, Tower and Tyndall
  • KiwiSaver Fund Manager of the Year: AMP Capital, Brook Asset Management and ING
  • Emerging Fund Manager of the Year: Milford Asset Management and Mint Asset Management.
