Wellywood to get free Wifi in CBD

Wellington will be the first city in New Zealand to offer free wireless internet services across most of its CBD.

The service will go live in August 2011 so will be available in time for the Rugby World Cup.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown said that an agreement has been reached between CityLink and the Wellington City Council to establish a free-to-use Wi-Fi network in the main areas of the CBD.

"This is a significant step in our city's evolution to a digital city."

"Initial coverage will be most of the area from Cuba Street, Waitangi Park, Courtenay Place along the 'Golden Mile' ending at the Westpac Stadium. The service will eventually be extended to other locations such as Wellington Zoo, Zealandia, the Cable Car, Carter Observatory and our main libraries."

CityLink chairman, David Ware says he sees the future of telecommunications as being built on a platform of fibre and wireless - this is an exciting step in that direction.

It would be good if they extended the free Wifi to the trains as a small bit of compensation for the terrible service we endure! At least then we could read the news while sitting in our delayed or broken train!
