Visitors from Japan have declined significantly since the March earthquake and tsunami but arrivals from Britain and Germany recovered strongly in April, Auckland Airport said.
Arrivals from Japan were down 44.5% in April from a year earlier, and arrivals from Korea were down 40.5%. Arrivals from Germany were up 24.1% and arrivals from the United Kingdom were up 20.4%. Traffic from Europe was affected by Icelandic volcanic ash this time last year.
Overall, the airport handled 6.8% more international passengers than a year ago in April. A new service from Jetstar Asia increased passenger numbers from Singapore.
The number of domestic passengers through the airport was little changed.
