Contact Energy has promised $6.8 million to help solve flooding problems in and around Alexandra in Central Otago.

The government and Contact have signed a deed which formalises their joint contributions to help build flood barriers to protect the main parts of Alexandra. The deed also provides for the purchase of certain flood prone properties, or of easements over properties where flood protection works are not practical.

In a joint statement Contact boss Paul Anthony, deputy PM Jim Anderton and Civil Defence Minister George Hawkins say the plan will help people who were seriously affected by the major floods in 1995 and 1999, and will provide greater flood protection for the town.

"We are pleased to be able to provide this assistance to the people of Alexandra. The package is designed to provide Alexandra with a high standard of flood protection for the future, and will also offer help to those who were most seriously affected by past flooding," Mr Anthony and the Ministers said.

Mr Anthony says Contact, as the operator of the local Clyde and Roxburgh dams, was a part of the local community, and the action shows it takes its community responsibilities seriously.

The energy company's attitude has earned a pat on the back from the government, which says Contact could have taken a hard line approach, but hasn't.
