Snow storms in the UK this week had an unintended consequence of a New Zealand flight landing at a New Zealand-owned airport.

Wellington-based infrastructure investor Infratil said in its operational update to the NZX today that on December 19 Glasgow Prestwick hosted NZ39 from Auckland, when it was diverted from snowbound Heathrow.

Passengers completed their trip south by bus.

"This may well be the first time that a New Zealand commercial air service has landed at a New Zealand-owned airport outside of New Zealand. Glasgow Prestwick is near the coast and is only very infrequently closed by weather," Infratil said.

Infratil wholly owns Glasgow Prestwick Airport, which is located on the Ayrshire coast in Western Scotland.

Nice to hear a old place mentioned, remember it from pre war days when there was only a couple of bi planes and that was something, left there in 1955 for NZ.
