Union v Qantas off to court

The Airline Pilots Association is taking Qantas New Zealand to the Employment Court over the company's pilot lockout last year.

Then Ansett New Zealand, the airline acted in response to the union's industrial action following a restructuring to cut costs and lift productivity.

Association president Keith Molloy said the October 16 hearing would establish whether the lockout was legal, while other issues included unjustifiable dismissal and "harsh and oppressive" activities by the company. Mr Molloy said three weeks had been set down for the hearing.

The carrier which became Qantas New Zealand on Monday, has been forced to cancel several flights a day due to a shortage of pilots.
