Market close: Shares close slightly lower

The sharemarket fell slightly today with the NZSE50 down -0.49% to end the day at 3,354.

The day wasn't so flash for the top three, Telecom fell 0.9%, following a 1.2% loss on Monday. Fletcher Building lost 2.1% and Contact Energy dropped 1.6%.

In the retail space, Hallenstein Glasson dipped 0.4%, but The Warehouse Group increased 1.7%. Pumpkin Patch and Michael Hill closed unchanged.

Among major gainers, OceanaGold Corporation added 6.94%, Skellerup soared 4.3%, Vector and Tourism Holdings surged 3.6% each, Sky Network Television jumped 3.0%, and Cavalier gained 3.2%.

Other major losers included BLIS Technologies who dropped 18.46%, Dorchester Pacific decreased 11.11%, Plus SMS Holdings dipped 8.33%, Fisher & Paykel Appliances 1.9%, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare 2.0%, Freightways 1.9%, New Zealand Oil & Gas 2.0%, Pike River Coal 2.2% and SkyCity 2.1%.

APN News & Media, was up 1.49% today afer reporting its first-half profit fell 0.7% as a weakening New Zealand economy spurred advertisers to cut spending.

According to the Real Estate Institute, the median house price in Auckland fell to NZ$421,000 from NZ$435,000 in June. Property sales tumbled 42% from July 2007, to a “dismal” 1,411, the institute said in a statement.

In Australia, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 closed 27.5 points, or 0.6%, higher at 5053.6.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 48.03, or 0.41% to 11,782.35. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose nine, or 0.69% to 1,305.32, while the NASDAQ rose 25.85, or 1.07% to 2,439.9.
