Market close: Shares close higher extending yesterday's gains

The sharemarket rose slightly today with the NZSE50 up 0.79% to end the day at 3,379.

Telecom closed little changed, while Contact Energy advanced 0.8% and Fletcher Building jumped 2.9%.

The retail space was again mixed with Hallenstein Glasson slipping 0.4% and The Warehouse Group falling 1.2%, but Pumpkin Patch added to yesterday's gains and was up 2.6%. Michael Hill closed unchanged.

Other major gainers included Turners Auctions up 9%, Metheven 3.7%, Goodman Fielder 2.8%, Auckland International Airport 2.1%, AMP NZ Office Trust 2.8%, Ebos Group 4.4%, and Fisher & Paykel Appliances 2.0% and Rakon 2.9%.

Today's top losers were Heritage Gold dropping 13.5%, Pike River Coal plunged 4.5% and Infratil fell 2.3%.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was up 14.2 points, or 0.29%, to 4983.3, while the broader All Ordinaries climbed 11.9 points, or 0.24%, to 5030.

On the back of another drop in oil prices, the Dow rose 40.3, or 0.35%, to 11,656.07. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 4.31, or 0.34%, to 1,289.19, and the NASDAQ rose 28.54, or 1.21%, to 2,378.37.
