Where can I get free, historical information on share prices?

Text too small?
Q: I am looking for a source of free, historical downloadable sharemarket data for the NZ and Australian exchanges. Until recently this was available from downloadquotes.com, but they have now started charging for this. I am seeking to familiarise myself with market fluctuations and technical analysis generally, and would like to test various hypothetical approaches against current market sentiment.

A: Unfortunately I can't find anywhere you can get the information you are after for free. There are lots of places where you can get the information for a fee. These companies have to pay the NZSE for this information so they charge for it. You could try asking your broker for the information - they might be able to arrange for you to receive it for a period of time at no cost. Here are some websites to visit and compare prices if you have no luck finding this information for free:
http://www.iguana.co.nz/
http://www.datex.co.nz/
http://www.henleyinvestor.co.nz/doforyou.asp

If you haven't already seen http://www.stockcharts.com/education/what/, have a look. It might give you some tips and ideas.
