Keith Smith is stepping down as chairman of The Warehouse Group and will be succeeded by Graham Evans, who has been a director of the group since 1998.

Smith had been involved with the group since the first store opened in 1982, and had been chairman since shortly after it became publicly listed in 1994,The Warehouse said today.

He had chaired other listed companies, had been a senior partner in the national accounting practice BDO Spicers, and was a past president of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants.

He would remain a director of The Warehouse, taking up the role of deputy chairman.

Evans had more than 40 years in the retail sector, including his tenure on the Warehouse board and 14 years as managing director of Woolworths NZ.

The change will happen on May 2, which will also be the day when chief executive Ian Morrice is succeeded by Mark Powell, most recently the chief executive of Warehouse Stationery.

The senior management change was announced previously, and Morrice was expected to remain a senior executive of The Warehouse until November, to support Powell and carry out some specific projects.
