Building UP AND AWAY: Building a level each week
Hartner Construction has just about completed a bang-up job on the J Street apartments in Wellington's Johnstone St.

Relatively new to Wellington with the local office only opening in May 1998, Hartner has built the 18-level apartment building in just 16 weeks.

Hartner's Wellington manager Terry Pinfold said the small site on a narrow, busy city street required a high degree of off-site manufacture, which contributed to the speedy construction.

Prefabricated steel frames were delivered to the site and erected four levels at a time. Floor slabs were then poured at two-day intervals, followed by fixing of the wall cladding panels. These panels included pre-installed windows so a full level could be completely closed in in one day, Mr Pinfold said.

The 74 studio, one, two and three-bedroom serviced apartments are expected to be completed by the end of August, three months ahead of schedule. The apartments range in size from 24sq m for the studio apartments up to 105sq m for the four penthouse apartments.

The project is being developed by Parklane Apart-
ments, which is run by Wayne Wright of Tauranga and owned by Garth Melville of Devonport, Auckland.
