Air New Zealand Ltd said the Christchurch earthquake in late February, combined with the Japan earthquake in March, significantly affected passenger numbers on its Japan route.
The airline said in its March operating update that demand decreased by 15.2% on its Asia, Japan and United Kingdom routes. Capacity decreased by 7.5% and the load factor decreased by 7 percentage points to 77.6%.
Excluding Japan, capacity remained the same on Asia, United Kingdom routes.
Air New Zealand carried 1.295 million passengers in March, which was up 4.3% on last year.
The group load factor decreased by 2.9 percentage points.
Short haul passenger numbers were up 6.1% on March last year and long haul passenger numbers were up 8%. The load factor on Tasman and Pacific routes decreased by 1.8 percentage points to 78.9%.
