NZX boss Mark Weldon is taking a four- to six-week leave of absence to work fulltime leading the Government's Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.

The role was announced by Prime Minister John Key today and NZX's board released a statement of support.

"The board and staff are unanimous that this is the right thing to do," the stock exchange operator said.
