Auckland International Airport has sacked a worker and called in the police after finding what it called "several unauthorised transactions" totalling $1.84 million.
An investigation by internal auditor EY is ongoing, the airport company said in a statement. Civil action is also being taken by Auckland Airport to try to recover the money.
"The board and management take this matter very seriously," said chief financial officer Phil Neutze. "With the assistance of EY we have taken immediate steps to review our internal processes and controls."
While the sum was significant, it wouldn't affect current financial results or previously reported results.
The airport company said it won't make further comment and the matter is now in the hands of the police.
