Market close: Slight gains to start the week

The sharemarket rose slightly today with the NZSE50 up 0.07% to end the day at 3,257.

Top stock Telecom surged 3.4% and Contact Energy advanced 0.6%, while Fletcher Building plunged 3.0%.

The retail space was mixed, Michael Hill was up 5.3% and Hallenstein Glasson rose 1.8%, but Pumpkin Patch plummeted 2.1% and The Warehouse Group declined 1.0%.

Banks had a bad day, ANZ slumped 10.9% after it said full-year profit may drop as much as 25% because of increased provisioning for bad debts. Westpac dropped 3.6% and AMP declined 0.9%.

Other major gainers included Tourism Holdings 8.8%, Cavalier Corp. 5.3%, New Zealand Exchange 4.8%, SkyCity 4.0%, and PGG Wrightson 3.5%.

Among other major losers, Fisher & Paykel Appliances tumbled 4.4%, Pike River Coal fell 2.5%, ING Property Trust plunged 2.4%, Goodman Property Trust plummeted 3.4%,

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was down 48.4 points, or 0.97%, to 4922.1 while the broader All Ordinaries dipped 39 points, or 0.78%, to 4989.9.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 21.41 points, or 0.19%, to 11,370.69 and the Standard & Poor's 500 broad-market index added 5.22 points to 1,257.76.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite gained 30.42 points, or 1.33%, to 2,310.43.
