Auckland-based engineering and consultancy firm Meritec has cemented itself as a major force in infrastructure planning following its merger with US giant AECOM.

The firm had recently expanded into Australia and Southeast Asia but had been looking for a global partner to develop further, chief executive Ian Parton said.

It now had global reach and could capitalise on major projects such as its recent $US150,000 contract to help rebuild Afghanistan's devastated power network.

Mr Parton said the electricity project was the first part of a 10-year $US10 billion rehabilitation package for Afghanistan identified by the World Bank. He said the merger with AECOM would give the firm access to projects much bigger than it could previously been involved in.

Meritec, which has annual turnover of $50 million, was responsible for New Zealand landmarks such as the Riverside Casino, Manapouri Tailrace Tunnel Temporary Bulkhead, Te Irirangi Drive and DB Breweries Otahuhu.

AECOM has annual revenues of over $US1.5 billion and employs more than 14,600 people. Its projects have included work on the Brooklyn Bridge, Westminster Station on the Jubilee Line in London, Port of Hong Kong and the Pentagon in Washington DC.
