Banker and Business Roundtable chairman Ralph Norris (51) is The National Business Review's New Zealander of the Year. The award, for his contribution to the nation in 2000, is the 10th award NBR has made since it was launched in 1991.

Editor-in-chief Nevil Gibson said Mr Norris, who has stepped in to take a key role in the funding of Team New Zealand's America's Cup campaign, might not be a populist choice but he best met all the criteria, having made an exceptional contribution to the nation.

"We respect his commitment to the free market and honour his standing in business. He is an outstanding New Zealander."
