US markets closed sharply lower on Tuesday as dire consumer confidence data increased worries over recession and the looming earnings season. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 1.56%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were down 2.01% and 2.98% respectively.

Other key markets ended higher. European stocks closed as follows: the FTSE100 (+0.90%), the Dax 30 (+0.35%), CAC 40 (+0.64%) and the STOXX (+0.29%). In Asia, the Hang Seng and Shanghai indices closed mixed. The key Asian indices ended yesterday as follows: Nikkei 225(+0.66%), HSI (+0.85%) and the Shanghai Composite (+0.89%).

The yield on the US 10 - year note was at 3.177%, while the 2 - year note was at 3.112%. Oil was up to $118.2 per barrel, up 2.66%. The gold price was at US$1820.84 per ounce, down 0.15%.
