One of New Zealand's most experienced public servants, Geoff Dangerfield, has resigned as head of the New Zealand Transport Agency, which he has headed since its creation from a merger of Transit NZ and Land Transport NZ in 2008.

He will leave the role in December.

“On behalf of successive Transport Ministers, I want to acknowledge and thank Geoff for his strong leadership, vision and relentless pursuit of excellence," said Transport Minister Simon Bridges in a statement.
