Export lift from new Carter Holt plant

CEO Chris Liddell today launched the company's new $132 million high-tech continuous press laminated veneer lumber plant, the first of its kind in New Zealand and one of only four in the world.

"This is a tremendous example of how innovative new technology can revolutionise a traditional industry," he says.

"The state-of-the-art technology here will give us a great edge and open up new markets in Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and Japan".

Mr Liddell says operating at full capacity the plant is expected to boost the country's export earnings by $70 million a year, with annual production eventually reaching 80,000m3 and creating more than 110 new jobs.

He says the plant is a major strategic investment for Carter Holt Harvey.

"It shows our commitment to the future of engineered wood in New Zealand."

The plant will utilise wood fibre from Carter Holt Harvey-owned forests throughout Northland.
