Was this an email from Cristine directly or via the list?

This is not advice that I have heard before. People will open
emails/attachments anyway. Also, people sort their incoming mail in
different ways, so who knows which email will be read first. This does
not sound like good advice to me. Better to use software from a vendor
who is serious about protecting their customers and/or use an
up-to-date protection package.

Absolutely correct. We have seen this many times.
