New Zealanders travelling in this country spent $7.6 billion in the year to March, 9.1% more than the year before, the Ministry of Tourism says.

Spending on transport was up 12.6%, most likely affected by higher fuel prices. When the impact of transport was removed, the overall increase in spending was 7.5%.

The figures come from the domestic travel survey, involving 15,000 New Zealand residents questioned by phone throughout the year.

Spending on overnight trips by New Zealand travellers was found to have increased by 9.9% to $4.9 billion, with the number of overnight trips increasing 4.3% to 15 million.

Daytrip spending rose 7.6% to $2.7 billion with the number of daytrips increasing by 0.7% to 30 million.
