Population gain from migration was two-thirds lower in January than a year earlier, as the number of New Zealanders leaving for Australia escalated.
Figures from Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) today show that in January the number of people arriving in this country intending to live permanently or long term (PLT) outnumbered PLT departures by 800.
That was down from a gain of 2500 in January 2010, with the main factor behind the fall being the 1400 increase in departures of New Zealand citizens to Australia, SNZ said.
On a seasonally adjusted basis there was a net PLT gain of 400 in January, within the 200 to 1000 range of the past 12 months, SNZ said.
For the January 2011 year, net migration at 8700 was down from 22,600 in the January 2010 year.
The 82,400 PLT arrivals in January were down 4% from January 2010, while departures were up 16% to 73,700.
The net PLT outflow to Australia was 22,400 in the January year, up from 16,000 a year earlier but below the 35,400 in the January 2009 year.
