Air New Zealand Chairman Tony Carter will retire in September 2019 and be replaced by current director Therese Walsh, the company said in a statement to the stock exchange.

Carter has held the role of chairman since 2013 after joining the board in 2010 and had previously told the board that 2019 was likely to be his final year at the helm of the national carrier.

Therese Walsh is currently chair of TVNZ, a director of ASB and Contact Energy and a previous director of the NZX. She is also a trustee of Wellington Regional Stadium, a board member of Antarctica New Zealand and Pro Chancellor at Victoria University. Her appointment as chair of Air New Zealand will coincide with the conclusion of her tenure as chair of TVNZ.

Air New Zealand shares were last down 0.2 percent at $3.245 and have risen 1.9 percent this year.

Market research firm Roy Morgan reported today that its 2017 Customer Satisfaction Survey of major brands operating in New Zealand had nominated Dubai-based Emirates as New Zealanders' favourite international airline and the 'best of the best' across all categories measured in the survey.
