Refuelling at service stations increasingly involves filling up more than cars if the latest statistics from Greenstone Energy are anything to go by.

A million chilled drinks, 170,000 pies and 160,000 ice creams were sold at the company's 229 retail service stations in the three weeks from December 20.

Greenstone, owned by Wellington-based infrastructure investor Infratil and the Guardians of the New Zealand Superannuation, bought Shell New Zealand's petrol stations and other downstream assets last year.

The new owners have been pushing the message that the business is New Zealand owned in marketing.

The company has said it has increased fuel sales by 4% in a market which declined by more than 1% in the first six months after the business became New Zealand owned.

A spokesman said sales of convenience foods in the three weeks from December 20 were up significantly on last year.

"We supply about a third of the New Zealand fuel market but increasingly customers are choosing to shop with us and we are absolutely delighted with it," a spokesman said.

The three weeks from December 20 are its busiest of the year for the company.

"At times ensuring constant supplies to Greenstone's over 300 outlets, retail and commercial, was a real challenge," the update said.

"In the South Island particularly the stock position in a number of fuels was at times tighter than desirable and work on systems and investment in facilities has been required."

The company maintained uninterrupted supply during the holiday season.

A new $10 million payment system is being installed from later this year at all service stations and truck stops.

The new system will lower operating costs and increase the speed of transactions.
