Steady Saturday offers respite for Christchurch

Text too small?

It may have passed unnoticed but Saturday was just the second day since February 22 that the Christchurch area registered no significant earthquakes.

GNS Science duty seismologist Brian Ferris said nothing could really be read into the absence of reported quakes, other than it was a "brief respite" from the continued rumblings.

On February 22, the day of the deadly 6.3-magnitude quake, there were 189 registered shakes.

On May 12 no significant quakes were recorded.

Mr Ferris said anything that was reported as felt GNS tried to put up on its website. It was unlikely there were no earthquakes at all, but that none big enough that people felt necessary to report.

Yesterday there was just one quake, measuring 3.6, at 6.42am, 10km east of Lyttelton.
