Second container ship grounds near Port of Tauranga

A second container vessel has grounded near Port of Tauranga but has been safely secured.

A Maritime New Zealand spokesman said the MV Schelde Trader struck rocks as it was leaving the harbour late this morning.

It was now safely secured at anchor in the harbour and no one was injured. There were no leaks from the vessel, which is 133 metres long.

The port said the ship is now under the control of tugs outside the harbour entrance. It will be brought back into the harbour for inspection.

The Schelde Trader had lost power and ran aground just north of North Rock, around the base of Mount Maunganui after leaving the port.

The incident comes as salvage worker continue to remove oil from the Rena which struck the Astrolabe Reef off the Bay of Plenty coast on Oct. 5.
