This followed on from a 2.4% increase in the June quarter.
Total electricity generation in the September quarter was 10,549 gigawatt hours.
For the year ended September total electricity generation was 32,273 gigawatt hours, 0.1% lower than the previous year. Thermal generation was up 25.5% for the year, while hydro and wind generation fell 11.4% over the same period.
Thermal generation rose 53.7% in the September quarter compared with the same time last year, taking it to the highest level since the survey began in 1960, Statistics NZ said.
Hydro and wind generation was 5787 gigawatt hours for the quarter. This supplied 55% of the electricity generated in the September quarter, compared with 71% in the previous September quarter.
Prices in the September quarter for commercial electricity users rose 1.3% compared with the previous quarter, and were up 10.6% compared with the same time last year.
Prices for household electricity users rose 1.1% over the quarter and 7.8% over the year.
The September quarter was the eighth consecutive quarterly price rise for commercial users, and the 15th for domestic users.
