New hotel to go ahead in Auckland as govt looks to boost tourism investment

A new $50 million hotel is to be built on Hobson Street in Auckland, with opening scheduled for early 2018 as the government seeks to persuade investors to build the capacity to handle the growing number of tourists visiting New Zealand.

The Wyndham Hotel Group say the property will have 86 units and feature a mix of studios, one, two and three bedroom apartments. It will employ about 500 people during construction and about fifty when it's operational.

It will be the ninth hotel operated by Wyndham in New Zealand.

New Zealand Trade & Enterprise Research published last month estimated an extra 26 hotels would be needed over the next decade above and beyond those already being planned and built. The research was part of 'Project Palace', which aims to speed up private investment in hotels in New Zealand. Auckland was estimated to have a shortfall of up to 1,782 rooms.
