Outdoor clothing and equipment retailer Kathmandu is opening a new store in Christchurch in response to the Christchurch earthquake.

The new store at 29 Main North Road, in Papanui is adjacent to the Northlands Shopping Centre in a building previously occupied by a Dogs Breakfast trading company store.

"Despite the current difficulties Christchurch is experiencing, Kathmandu is absolutely committed to Christchurch, and we are confident in the resilience of the people including our own team to get as much of the city up and running as is possible in the weeks ahead," managing director Peter Halkett said.

The Northlands Shopping Centre suffered only superficial damage in the February 22 earthquake while the Palms and Eastgate malls in the eastern suburbs have been more damaged.

Chief financial officer Mark Todd said the company would take possession of the new store on April 1 and it would take about a month to fit out with the full range of Kathmandu goods.

The company had experienced increased demand for a number of product categories since the earthquake, particularly in the camping and equipment ranges.

In parts of the city that were less affected by the earthquake there was considerably more shopping going on, he said.

The company also said today that it was committed to re-opening its Cashel Street and Riccarton stores. "We intend to transfer some of our existing Christchurch staff, whose employment has been affected by the earthquake damage, to fit out and open the new store. We would expect the new store to be convenient for many of our customers who previously shopped in the central city, as well as potential customers from the Wamakariri district," Halkett said.

The Papanui store adds to the three existing stores at Cashel Street, Riccarton and Tower Junction. The company's history is associated with Christchurch where its head office is located.
