Tony Carter, chairman of both Fisher & Paykel Healthcare and Air New Zealand, has been recognised by the NZ Shareholders Association for his leadership skills as a director.

The lobby group for retail investors named Carter its Beacon Award winner, citing his leadership skills and willingness to be open to a broad range of views, including those of the NZSA.

"His talents are illustrated by the success of Fisher & Paykel Healthcare and Air New Zealand, where he inherited the chair of good companies and made them truly great international companies," NZSA chairman John Hawkins said in a statement. "It is the turn of retail shareholders to honour his achievements and more importantly, his continuing promotion of the highest standards of governance, ethics and diversity in the corporate world."

The Beacon is given for "demonstrating outstanding performance across a range of criteria leadership, excellence in corporate governance and being respectful of the rights of all shareholders." Last year it was won by MightyRiverPower chair Joan Withers.

The Shareholders Association used to award a Golden Glob for villains of New Zealand business who had done such a poor job that they earned a rebuke from the body, but hasn't handed one out since 2011, when former Bridgecorp boss and convicted fraudster Rod Petricevic received the award.
