Market close: Shares close higher again

The sharemarket rose slightly today with the NZSE50 up 0.18% to end the day at 3,373.

Top stock Telecom was down 2.74%, Contact Energy was down .36%, but Fletcher Building advanced 2.35%.

Among the retailers, Michael Hill was up 8.43% and Hallenstein Glasson was up 1.02%. But Pumpkin Patch was down 1.26% and The Warehouse Group lost 1.47%.

Other gainers included APN News & Media up 6.97%, Wellington Drive Technologies up 6.67%, Fisher & Paykel Appliances up 5%, Abano Healthcare up 4.85%, Hellaby Holdings up 4.37% and Air New Zealand up 3.51%.

Top losers today included Richina Pacific down 12.50%, ProvencoCadmus down 5.56%, Windflow Technology down 4.41%, Metlifecare down 4.35% and OceanaGold Corporation down 3.90%.

Australia's economic growth slowed more than expected in the second quarter, stoking expectations the central bank will add to this week's interest rate cut.

Botry-Zen, the maker of biological control agents, lost 5% today after announcing support from a German businessman, who agreed to buy 10.4 million of the company's shares.

The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 was down 56 points, or 1.09%, to 5060 dragged down by resources stocks.

Overnight, the Dow fell 26.63 points, or 0.2%, to 11,516.92. The S&P/500 index fell 5.25, or 0.4%, to 1277.58, and the technology-dominated Nasdaq Composite index fell 18.28, or 0.8%, to 2349.24.
