Brisbane-based Comet Ridge says it will soon start analysing data gathered from its airborne survey of coal seam gas (CSG) areas in Waikato and the West Coast.

Comet Ridge managing director Tor McCaul said the data collection programme was meeting expectations as an efficient method of defining the most substantive target areas for its drilling programme.

It was the first extensive airborne survey for CSG in this country.

In the first four weeks of the programme aerial surveying had been completed at the Waikato permit area, covering more than 2460sq km.

Surveying had also been completed over 4000sq km of permits in the Buller and Greymouth areas, meaning the company had surveyed most of the initial target areas across the 8600sq km it had under licence in three exploration blocks in this country.

The surveying programme was expected to be finished by the end of April.

"We expect to define a number of high value CSG targets across all three New Zealand permits which will allow us to prioritise drilling targets," McCaul said.

It was planned to start drilling before the end of 2011.
