Qantas chief executive Geoff Dixon says the aviation industry is entering a new "growth paradigm, and that the focus is shifting to Asia.

"We believe this is an historic opportunity for Qantas," Dixon said during a speech in Sydney.

He added that competition remains fierce and that the airline will defend its interests on the Australia-US route.

"We do not underestimate our competitive challenges," he said.

"The US route only makes up 15% of our profit but we will aggressively defend it."

Dixon also said the airline was reviewing its options for its Frequent Flyers programme, although it still intended to retain control of the business.

He said Qantas was busy finding new ways of developing an integrated freight operation, with an increasing footprint in Asia.

Dixon also said the fuel surcharge Qantas charges on airfares for international flights will increase from August 9.

Dixon added that Qantas could move to an alternative ownership structure for its fleet.
