The number of kiwis who packed their bags and headed on overseas trips increased in November, while the number of people arriving to visit family and friends reached a record month high.

The number of New Zealanders heading on overseas trip rose nine percent to 174,600 in November, up from 160,800 in the same month last year, according to Statistics New Zealand.

The biggest increases were in departures for Australia, rising 4,600, and India, up 1,100.

This was a record for a November month, and was possibly boosted by people delaying their trips until after the Rugby World Cup.

"Departures in the combined months of September and October 2011, which coincided with the Rugby World Cup, were down 9 percent when compared with the same period in 2010,” said Geoff Bascand, the Government Statistician.

The number visitor arrivals to visit family and friends increased by 7,000 to 67,900, also lead by Australia and surpassing the previous November month high in 2009.

The biggest change in visitor arrivals by country of residence between November 2010 and November 2011 was Australia, rising 6,400 and China up 3,700.

The number of tourists from Japan was down 2,500 followed by Korea, down 1,600.
