The sharemarket rose slightly today with the NZSE50 up 0.49% to end the day at 3,319.
Among top stocks, Telecom was up 2.5% and Fletcher Building gained 0.3%, but Contact Energy slightly dropped 0.1%.
The retail space was mixed, Pumpkin Patch increased 2.8%, Hallenstein Glasson and The Warehouse Group both added 0.4%, while Michael Hill dropped 1.3%. Briscoe Group closed unchanged after reporting sales fell 2.3% in the second quarter as retailers cut prices, eroding margins.
Biggest gainers today were Life Pharmacy and Xero, both up 10%. The biggest decline was Pulse Utilities dropping 29%.
The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index had fallen 16.3 points, or 0.33%, to 4887.7, while the broader All Ordinaries index lost 20.4 points, or 0.41%, to 4957.6. The market closed weaker on lower base metal prices and a profit downgrade by Lend Lease Corporation who said annual profit fell 47% after it wrote down the value of assets in the UK
The Dow fell 51.70, or 0.45%, to 11,326.32, the Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 7.07, or 0.56%, to 1,260.31, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 14.59, or 0.63%, to 2,310.96.
