Air New Zealand has launched an Aviation Institute as a "one-stop-shop" training organisation.

Comprising five schools and two main campuses at Auckland and Christchurch, and employing 150 staff, the Aviation Institute will conduct training for pilots, engineers, flight attendants and airport check-in staff.

The courses include a new first officer programme in which five partner organisations will provide initial flight training complemented by commercial airline entry assessments, training standards and advanced training modules through to first turboprop or jet type rating, the airline said.

The five flying schools are Southern Wings (Invercargill), Air Hawke's Bay (Hastings), International Aviation Academy (Christchurch), Massey University School of Aviation (Palmerston North) and Nelson Aviation College (Motueka).

Air New Zealand said it had created the programme to "ensure a future supply of commercial airline pilots is available for the New Zealand aviation industry - including Air New Zealand".

From 2012 the Aviation Institute will also offer a Diploma in Aeronautical Maintenance Certification.

So why have a campus in Auckland and no flight school till you hit Hastings or Palmerston North?
