Job vacancies advertised online rose 2.3% between February and May, as measured by the Department of Labour's latest Jobs Online index.

Skilled vacancies in Canterbury rose 12.6% over the period, with construction and engineering showing large rises, while for the country as a whole skilled vacancies were up 1.9%.

Department of Labour head of research Vasantha Krishnan said the rise in skilled vacancies in Canterbury may be associated with anticipated reconstruction activity following the February earthquake.

Strong skills demand in Canterbury may also be flowing to the rest of the South Island where growth was up 6.8%.

Skilled vacancies rose only 0.1% in Auckland and slipped by 0.4% in Wellington.

Industries with the biggest growth nationally were construction and engineering, up 10.7%, while accounting, HR, legal and administration rose 7.2%.

Skilled vacancies were 21.7% higher than a year ago, while vacancies overall were up 20.1%.

The survey measures changes in job adverts on the Seek and Trade Me Jobs internet job sites.
