Bank of New Zealand has appointed Louis Hawke, who has worked for ANZ Australia, Westpac Banking Corp and as an economist for the Australian government, to its board.

Hawke will be an independent non-executive director of the 10 member BNZ board from Feb. 1, the company said. He has worked for ANZ Australia as their managing director of product, strategy and marketing, for Advance Bank (St George Business Finance) as general manager of commercial, and as a general manager at Westpac. He has also worked as a senior engagement manager at McKinsey & Co, specialising in strategic evaluations and takeovers, and as an economist for the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in Australia.

With a successful career in banking and finance, Hawke "has a keen grasp of how consumer behaviour and technological advances are changing the face of banking,” BNZ chairman Doug McKay said.

BNZ's board will be rounded out by chief executive Anthony Healy, corporate lawyer Prudence Flacks, former banker Stephen Moir, lawyer Mai Chen, Television New Zealand chief executive Kevin Kenrick, PwC New Zealand head Bruce Hassall, and BNZ parent National Australia Bank directors Phil Chronican and Angela Mentis.
