Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce Central chief executive Ken Harris has resigned due outside interests and other directorships.

Wellington business lobby president John Johnston said Harris’s commitments make it impractical for him to stay on as chief executive. Harris was the inaugural head after the Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce and Employers and Manufacturers Association (Central) merged in 2010.

“Harris has overseen the merger a successful merger of the old Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Employers and Manufacturers Association (central),” Johnson said in a statement. “The success of the merge is a result of efforts of both executive and staff, particularly given the trying economic times and the complexities of merging processes, staff and IT.”

Harris’s biggest private directorship is with NZL Group, a transport logistics group that also provides port operational services, including a joint venture with Ports of Auckland that aims to improve efficiency between the city’s seaport and the Wiri Inland Port in South Auckland.

The chamber will begin a search for a new chief executive shortly.
