The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has appointed long-time employee Yuong Ha the new chief economist and head of economics.

Since joining the bank in 1997, Ha has held a number of roles, including time in the economics department as manager of the modelling team and manager of the forecasting team. Over the past two years, he has been in the financial markets department, most recently as acting head. His appointment will take effect from April 29.

He replaces John McDermott who left to join the economic research institute Motu as an executive director earlier this year.

The central bank also announced that Vanessa Rayner has been appointed as head of financial markets. Since joining the bank in 2016, she has been an adviser and manager in the financial stability group. She also spent more than 10 years at the Reserve Bank of Australia, including management roles in the economics, financial markets and financial stability groups.  Her appointment will take effect from May 6.

“Both Vanessa and Yuong have broad central banking backgrounds, clear leadership capabilities and experience, and the ability to connect and collaborate both internally and externally,” said assistant governor and general manager economics, financial markets and banking, Christian Hawkesby.
